Laura Boswell — Printmaker

One to one studio days

These are one to one days with me in my studio. You can bring along a friend for a joint class, I will be offering a new 15% discount for double classes in 2012, but only one extra person as I like to make these days a focus on you, not a group. I can teach you Japanese woodblock or reduction linocut. If you want a flavour of either technique please visit the techniques section of my website.

What happens

The day runs from 10am to 5pm (though I am happy to start and finish a little later for long distance travellers) and it is intensive. I want you to have a really enjoyable day, but I also want you to leave with enough knowledge to be able to carry on at home if you wish. I have all the tools, blocks and paper that you’ll need, so no need to bring anything yourself. I’ll also provide you with a vegetarian soup lunch and as much tea and good coffee as you like.

Together we’ll work on your design to translate it from your idea onto your print blocks. I’ll teach you cutting, registration and printing. There’s plenty of opportunity to experiment and to try out ideas and at the end of the day you will leave with your prints, blocks and a comprehensive fact sheet with details of equipment, processes and a supplier list. For anyone who falls in love with the process, I also sell kits with everything you need to get started the moment you get home.

I am also happy to work with anyone wishing to take an advanced workshop focussing on some particular aspect of their printing such as design or registration etc. We’ll work out a format for the day in advance together to ensure you get the most from the experience.

Costs and booking

From January 2012 the price for the day is £120. If you would like to discuss booking a day with me then please mail me at laura@lauraboswell.co.uk or use the contact form on this website. Anybody who contacted me before 20 November will be charged the 2011 rate.

Feedback

I was amazed by how much can be achieved in only one day's teaching. I think this was possible because you are highly organised. Every aspect of the day was very thoroughly prepared; equipment was at the ready, instructions were clear and timing was excellent. Also you were to hand in the role of assistant - sidekick as you called it. The fact sheet summarising all the stages of the process did away with any need for notetaking and I could concentrate all my thoughts to the work in hand.
My second big impression was of the joy of discovering a technique which so magically transforms my ideas into the image I wish to create. Waterbased printing gives rigour to the more nebulous art of watercolour painting. I appreciated being able to learn the technique without having to make the journey to Japan myself but benefitting from your experience there.
Thirdly it was a great pleasure to meet you and to see your studio and hear about the way you work. That has stimulated me to make some projected changes to the way I approach my own art.
And the soup was delicious!

The one day studio course was brilliant and we couldn't have been more pleased with what we learnt. We were very impressed with the way you managed to cover all the basic techniques; enabling us to complete a woodblock print from start to finish in a single day. The day with you was a combination of excellent teaching and very good company, we couldn't have enjoyed it more. When I returned home I wondered if I would be able to reproduce the techniques I had learnt, however with the aid of your detailed and comprehensive course notes I was able to confidently complete my first solo print run.

Not only did I learn a great deal about lino printing; when I went along to one of Laura's studio days, I also came away with a passion for printing that will stay with me for life.
Laura was so helpful, friendly and a lot of fun. She also makes a mean soup!

Not long after the course, I managed to find an antique bookbinding press for making my own prints.
I've made a start and really enjoy the process. I like the fact that it mixes creativity with a hands on craft.

I met Laura when we were demonstrating side by side at Hatfield House and as a printmaker myself I am always keen to extend my knowledge and expertise. Laura’s studio day did not disappoint, ideas bounced around for the whole session, and coupled with hard work - and a very welcome lunch break when we shared experiences - the day was rewarding and excellent value for money. Wholly enjoyable for beginners and ‘experts’ alike.
